The Solemnity of Mary or, Celebrating the Great Mother

On the 1st of January the Catholic Church celebrate the Feast day of the Solemnity of Mary, It is traditionally celebrated with the Latin Rite. ( )

The feast is a celebration of Mary's motherhood of Jesus. The English title "Mother of God" is a translation of the Latin title Dei Genetrix, which means "She Who Generated God"

January 1st as we see is the feast day of the Mother of God, the Mother Goddess. Eternal giver of life, keeper of the mysteries of birth, life, death and rebirth. It is through the Mother that we find the doorway to resurrection. Here is a day to celebrate the gift of light that pours forth from the Mother, to give thanks for the gifts of Wisdom. Within the image of Mary we have the hope of life to come, eternal life through death and rebirth.

One of the most beautiful acts that we can share in celebration is of the coming together to share food. For me Of Jesus instructing the disciples to break bread and drink wine all in his name, coupled with his saying:

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” ~Mathew 18:20

I see a beauty in simple spirituality, whenever we gather with others with the intent to be in the presence of the Divine, something happens that brings us into connection with the Great Spirit.  In the gesture of sharing food with people we are illustrating one of the most fundamental principle's of humankind, love one another.  We are supporting each other, we offering food, to sustain ourselves and in doing this we bring down the nurturing aspects of divinity.

The Great Mother can be celebrated and honoured in this way, by bringing together fellow people in love, thanksgiving for the gift of life, for the birth of light and the blessings of Wisdom.  Not in gluttonous indulgence, but by sharing the gifts of the earth, in simple homemade bread, in a glass of wine, by sharing fruit and simple fayre we acknowledge the gifts of the Mother.  In coming together we create that special space in which the presence of the divine can descend and be with us.  A Blessing for the food, a few candles some lovely music that celebrates motherhood and all that is beautiful within the womankind and we have for ourselves a lovely communion, returning us to the arms of the Goddess, united with other souls in joint honouring of the Mother of light, life and love.

A simple prayer to the Great Mother...

O dawn of the world, Mother of Light.
Gift of life, love and peace.
Mother of God's, bringer of the child of hope.
We honour you this day,
O lamp of wisdom, brightest flame,
You who are known by many name's.
Your fruits we share,
Your love we bring into our hearts,
Mother of Divinty, Mother of Earth
We are your children
Our souls sing your name,
O voyager in the dark
Our lips sing your songs,
For you are life, you are love,
Our prayers assend on sweetest incense
As in the Temple of the heart we light a candle to thee.
O gracious Mother, Dei Genetrix
Hear our prayer.

Bright Blessings and Happy New Year
